School of Biology Bioinformatics Computer Server
The bioinformatics computer server runs the Linux operating system. The current hardware consists of an IBM System X with dual-core, Opeteron CPUs, 16 GB RAM, 14 TB storage, and automatic tape backup. The server may be connected-to using, for example, ssh or scp from within the University of St Andrews network.
A variety of bioinformatics software is availabile on the server, including:
BLAST - "stand-alone" version of the NCBI program (e.g. for your own databases)
EMBOSS - bioinformatics package
Fasta - sequence alignment (accelerated version)
MrBayes - phylogeny reconstruction
PAML - sequence evolution
PHYLIP - phylogeny reconstruction
WISE2 - genome annotation
Further software may be added on request, if it's freely available and installation is not too difficult. You may also install software in your own home directory.
