I am a Research Technician working on the BLUE-coast project, focusing on physical and biological dynamic coastal processes and their role in coastal recovery. My role within this project includes both field-based and laboratory analysis (e.g. chlorophyll and carbohydrate contents of sediments).
I also work on the John Templeton Foundation funded “Extended Evolutionary Synthesis” project. This project investigates the impact of niche construction by ecosystem engineers on the evolutionary trajectories of bacteria. This involves maintaining experimental microcosms to examine the functional impact of single and combined populations using environmental genomics supported by next generation sequencing.
I have a BSc in Zoology and an MSc in Marine Biology from University College Cork, Ireland. I have previously worked with the Marine Institute (Ireland) as a port fisheries analyst and as a fisheries observer on board commercial fishing vessels. More recently I worked as a Research Assistant with the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) on the EU FP7 project NEPHROPS where as part of a team we carried out acoustic mapping of soft sediment habitats and recapture and tag removal of coded wire tagged Nephrops norvegicus to investigate growth and also stable isotope analysis to study their diet.
