£1M+ Research Award: 'Structural biology of paramyxoviruses'
A £1M+ Programme Grant from the Wellcome Trust has been awarded to study the structural biology of paramyxoviruses.
Paramyxoviruses are a large family of animal viruses that include those that cause mumps and croup in humans, kennel cough in dogs and Newcastle disease in chickens. The Wellcome funding will allow us to study the virus at the atomic level using X-rya crystallography and NMR. In particular, we are interested in how the virus attaches and fuses to cells, how new virus particles are released from infected cells, and how the virus subverts the immune response. These studies should lead to new therapeutic possibilities as well as adding to our fundamental understanding of viral infection.
