F1000 Top Quality Research

A paper from researchers at the Scottish Oceans Institute based at the University of St Andrews has been chosen as one of the top published articles in biology and medicine.

The paper “The parallel evolution of dwarfism in Arctic charr is accompanied by adaptive divergence in mTOR-pathway gene expression” by D.J. Macqueen, B.K. Kristjánsson, C.G. Paxton, V.L. Vieira, and I.A. Johnston was published in the August issue of the journal Molecular Ecology.

It shows which genes have been regulated to produce dwarf Arctic char in lakes in Iceland. It adds important evidence to show the mechanisms underlying the evolution of body size and form in fish.

The paper was selected by F1000 (Faculty of 1000) as being in the top 2% of papers published in biology and medicine.

F1000 identifies and evaluates the most important articles in biology and medical research publications. Articles are selected by a peer-nominated global 'Faculty' of the world's leading scientists and clinicians who then rate them and explain their importance. From the numerical ratings awarded, we have created a unique system for quantifying the importance of individual articles and, from these article ratings, journals. Both articles and journals can then be ranked overall and, importantly, at the subject, or Faculty, level.
