St Andrews is set in a spectacular position. On one side it has the wooded hills of the Fife countryside but to the north and east it looks out over a rocky headland to the dramatic waters of the North Sea. For more than a thousand years, the town of St Andrews has been a focal point for bishops and kings, saints and martyrs, students and holidaymakers - not to mention the greatest golfers in the world.
In its early days, St Andrews attracted pilgrims from near and far to pay homage at one of the most important shrines of early Christendom. Since 1410, students from throughout the United Kingdom and around the world have converged on the University of St Andrews, which has grown from humble beginnings as Scotland's first university to assume a place among the world's great institutions of higher learning.
St Andrews is a walking town. As long as you get accommodation that is on the map, you can easily walk to the conference venue each day. The conference venue is the Bute Building, which can be accessed either from Queens Terrace or from South Street by walking through an archway between St Mary's Quadrangle and Parliament Hall.
