Bird community responses to climate change: sources of variationEmma-Liina MarjakangasFinnish Museum of Natural History/University of Helsinki

Climate change affects ecological communities via changes in the community composition. The taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic composition of communities is changing drastically, but the change across communities is not constant. My research focuses on understanding what underlies the variation in communities’ differential responses to climate change. For this, I use high-quality data of bird communities at broad spatial scales. In my talk, I will present case studies on the sources of variation, relating to both extrinsic and intrinsic properties of communities and the species within them. I will also outline conservation applications that arise from the better understanding of the variation in the bird communities’ responses to climate change.
