Linking Land and Ocean – Managing Agriculture to Protect Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Prof Iain GordonAustralian National University

Prof Iain Gordon

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the most spectacular and diverse natural wonders of the world. The Reef extends for over 2500km and hosts over 3000 individual reefs. Despite rumours of its demise the Reef still hosts a large tourist industry, but global and local efforts need to be increased to protect the Reef from the impacts of pollution (climate change, herbicides, pesticides, sediments & nutrients). In this talk I will highlight the effects of these pollutants on the Reef and discuss ways in which science is being used to buy the Reef time in which it can have a chance of adapting to the threats it faces.
