This presentation will be split into two rough halves. Firstly, I will describe my own research interests in the topic of plant-plant interactions, particularly with respect to beneficial plant-plant interactions. I’ll discuss the work I’ve been involved in to explore their role in community structure and function, and how that fundamental knowledge is now being integrated into applied research especially around the issue of sustainable crop production. Secondly, I will broaden out these themes to give an overview of the research activities of the Ecological Sciences Department at the James Hutton Institute, covering the work we do on fundamental research questions and how that knowledge is then applied to addressing the joint biodiversity and climate crises.
