If you have problems accessing this, please contact <a href=\"mailto:ste@st-andrews.ac.uk\">Sean Earnshaw,<\/a> Biology IT support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<button class=\"accordion-group__toggle\">Open all<\/button><ul class=\"accordion-group accordion-group__toggle-container\">\n<li class=\"accordion-item\"><div class=\"accordion-item__toggle toggle-me\"><h3 class=\"accordion-item__toggle-title\"><button class=\"accordion-item__toggle-button\">How do I find grants to apply for?<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"accordion-item__content\">\n<p>Many grants have eligibility requirements in terms of contract and\/or time since PhD completion. While contract staff cannot be the Principal Investigator on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/\">UKRI<\/a> grant proposals, there are other grants for which post-doctoral staff can apply and it is worth looking around for opportunities. Also it is possible to be a \u2018named\u2019 researcher on a grant submitted by a PI if you contribute to writing a grant, so it is worth speaking to a mentor if you wish to be involved in a UKRI application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/researchfundingsupport\/\">Research Funding Support<\/a> offers support in all aspects of research awards and contracts from pre-application (idea\/finding funding and costing stage) to award (contract negotiation, project account setup, invoicing and financial reporting).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"accordion-item\"><div class=\"accordion-item__toggle toggle-me\"><h3 class=\"accordion-item__toggle-title\"><button class=\"accordion-item__toggle-button\">Where can I get help with writing grant applications?<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"accordion-item__content\">\n<p>Within the School of Biology, we have initiatives underway to help junior researchers improve success rates for grant\/fellowship applications:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We provide recent <a href=\"https:\/\/universityofstandrews907.sharepoint.com\/:f:\/r\/sites\/biointernal\/research\/Shared%20Documents\/Examples%20of%20Funded%20Grants?csf=1&amp;web=1&amp;e=kCc3Lw\">successful grant exemplars<\/a> via the internal staff website <a href=\"https:\/\/universityofstandrews907.sharepoint.com\/sites\/biointernal\">bioInternal<\/a> (password protected). Please allow sufficient time for this process (contact the <a href=\"mailto:biodor@st-andrews.ac.uk\">Biology Director of Research<\/a> by email to set this up).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We run in-house grant and fellowship-writing workshops.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We have a research <a href=\"https:\/\/universityofstandrews907.sharepoint.com\/:w:\/r\/sites\/biointernal\/research\/Shared%20Documents\/Biology%20Grant%20application%20checklist%2007_2020.docx?d=weefb1286ff5f45fb80090d30f42cffbe&amp;csf=1&amp;web=1&amp;e=xr13bg\">grant application checklist<\/a> on bioInternal with items to consider from 3 months prior to the grant deadline.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"accordion-item\"><div class=\"accordion-item__toggle toggle-me\"><h3 class=\"accordion-item__toggle-title\"><button class=\"accordion-item__toggle-button\">How do I get ethics approval for my work?<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"accordion-item__content\">\n<p>Anyone conducting research using animals should consult the University Teaching and Research Ethics Committee (UTREC) website.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"accordion-item\"><div class=\"accordion-item__toggle toggle-me\"><h3 class=\"accordion-item__toggle-title\"><button class=\"accordion-item__toggle-button\">How am I doing?<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"accordion-item__content\">\n<p>It is expected that all staff undertake an annual appraisal, held in January each year. For postdocs, this appraisal will generally be conducted by your line manager, but you can request an alternative assessor if you prefer.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"accordion-item\"><div class=\"accordion-item__toggle toggle-me\"><h3 class=\"accordion-item__toggle-title\"><button class=\"accordion-item__toggle-button\">How do I meet people from other departments?<\/button><\/h3><\/div><div class=\"accordion-item__content\">\n<p>There are various networking schemes run across the university:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/womeninscience.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk\/\">Women in science at St\u00a0Andrews (WISSA)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/hr\/edi\/sex_gender\/ecwn\/\">Early career women\u2019s network (ECWN)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/hr\/edi\/stafflgbtiqnetwork\/\">Staff LGBTIQ+ network<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also engage with improving university policy and practice for research staff via involvement with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/staff\/research\/policies\/researchstaffforum\/\">Research and Teaching Staff Forum<\/a>.
