{"id":1688,"date":"2022-03-22T11:05:25","date_gmt":"2022-03-22T11:05:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/biology.st-andrews.ac.uk\/edi\/?page_id=1688"},"modified":"2023-12-11T12:50:26","modified_gmt":"2023-12-11T12:50:26","slug":"teaching-resources","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/biology.st-andrews.ac.uk\/edi\/teaching-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Guest lecture on &#8216;An example of introducing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion teaching into an undergraduate Biology curriculum&#8217;<\/h2>\r\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Introducing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion teaching into an undergraduate Biology curriculum\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Rj1cwQDAPs8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\r\n<p>Dr Michelle Welsh, University of Glasgow, describes the approach adopted by staff and students to embed EDI into Year 3 and Year 4 anatomy modules, and considers how this could <wbr \/>applied more widely to an undergraduate Biology curriculum.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Racism in Biology<\/h2>\r\n<p>Prof Kevin Laland has produced a lecture on Racism in Biology. \u00a0This has been widely viewed, and was noted in Fola Ikpehai\u2019s blog about <a href=\"https:\/\/sums.org.uk\/news\/race-and-ethnicity-in-higher-education\/\">race and ethnicity in higher education<\/a> as part of UK Race Equality Week.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Decolonising the Biology Curriculum<\/h2>\r\n<p>Biology undergraduate students have produced a <a href=\"https:\/\/biology.st-andrews.ac.uk\/edi\/?smd_process_download=1&amp;download_id=1681\">guide to staff on decolonising the biology curriculum<\/a>. \u00a0This work originated as part of a\u00a0Summer Teams Enterprise Project (STEP) led by Mari Coulibaly, coached by Salma Ali and Jurin Katayama, and supervised by Prof Kevin Laland. Presented at staff council, 2021, this is available to all. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Decolonising the curriculum spans several EDI inclusion concerns. We encouraged students to undertake one of the Harvard Implicit Social Attitudes tests. We then discussed gender bias in job advertisements, the issues of language used, and gender differences in assessment of application criteria.<\/p>\r\n<p>In spring 2018, we focused on the issue of disabilities &#8211; and how consideration of disabilities was required for the planning of events. The students were asked to design a public engagement event, and the importance of taking into account the various disabilities of attendees, that may or may not be physically evident, for the event was discussed.<\/p>\r\n<p>In spring 2019, we focused on sample selection and bias.
