is a diverse subject centred around the mechanisms and principles of life \u2013 from the way molecules and cells work, to the way whole ecosystems function.\u00a0 Thus the study of biology can lead to very diverse career choices. \u00a0Here we have tried to compile resources which highlight information about a career in biology, and what options and choices are available to help with this.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/synergy.st-andrews.ac.uk\/bio-equalityanddiversity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bio<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/biology.st-andrews.ac.uk\/edi\/\">logy Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee<\/a>\u00a0is working to reduce any bias throughout a university biology career.\u00a0 In terms of gender, we want to encourage both men and women to pursue a career in biology, and ensure that men and women are equally represented as leaders in this field.<\/p>\n<p>Watch\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/biologyheritage.rsb.org.uk\/bcw-interviews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interviews<\/a>\u00a0with 50 biologists, including Sir David Attenborough, Professor Dame Sally Davies, and Professor Richard Dawkins, talking about their inspirations and careers on the <a href=\"https:\/\/biologyheritage.rsb.org.uk\/bcw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royal Society of Biology Changing the World project website.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Secondary school students<\/h4>\n<p>Wondering about a degree in biology?\u00a0 In St Andrews, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">our Biology degrees<\/a> are open to anyone and we have various schemes to assist with widening access.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuffieldfoundation.org\/nuffield-research-placements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nuffield research placements<\/a> can provide an opportunity for summer work experience working alongside a biologist for secondary school students.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsb.org.uk\/careers-and-cpd\/careers\/make-a-difference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Royal Society of Biology (RSB) Make a Difference<\/a> website highlights six very different types of careers accessible through a Biology degree.\u00a0 The RSB has also produced a comprehensive pdf guide on choosing your biology degree called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsb.org.uk\/images\/Becoming_a_Biologist_Degrees_and_Careers_in_Biology.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Becoming a biologist: Degrees and careers in biology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stem.org.uk\/resources\/collection\/3338\/future-morph\">Futuremorph<\/a> website provides careers advice for 11-13 year olds, 14-16 year olds and 16+ year olds.<\/p>\n<h4>Undergraduate students<\/h4>\n<p>Useful information on Biology careers can be found at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsb.org.uk\/careers-and-cpd\/careers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royal Society of Biology careers<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biochemistry.org\/Education\/Careers.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Biochemical Society careers<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some academic societies also run conferences or summer schools specifically for undergraduate careers, e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishecologicalsociety.org\/content\/undergraduate-summer-school\/\">British Ecological Society Undergraduate Summer School<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Postgraduate students<\/h4>\n<p>In terms of career opportunities, postgraduate students may be interested in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stem.org.uk\/stem-ambassadors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">STEM Ambassador scheme<\/a>.\u00a0 This volunteer scheme encourages STEM research volunteers to engage with young people inside and out of the classroom, bringing STEM subjects to life.<\/p>\n<p>The Medical Research Council have produced <a href=\"https:\/\/mrc.ukri.org\/skills-careers\/interactive-career-framework\/#\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an interactive map<\/a> with information on options for careers and funding in biomedical research within academia and\/or industry.<\/p>\n<p><span>Vitae supports the professional development of researchers, and their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitae.ac.uk\/researcher-careers\/researcher-career-stories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Researcher Career Stories<\/a> <\/span><span>showcases over 150 career stories from researchers, many of whom go on to work outside of academia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Finding a job<\/h4>\n<p>After a bioscience degree, there are various options.
