Biology is working to ensure that our staff have thought about ensuring equality, diversity and inclusiveness in their advertising and recruitment, and have a new process for submitting adverts and further particulars to HR.

Biology staff advertising for a new appointment should consult the University guide on inclusive recruitment and are asked to fill out the School of Biology Advertising and Recruitment Checklist (also available on the new bioInternal in the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee’s EDI Website folder). The checklist is to ensure that your advert and further particulars meet the school equality, diversity and inclusion concerns for advertising and recruitment and equally encourage applicants of all backgrounds to apply.

All adverts and panel nominations for staff positions need to be forwarded to the HR Recruitment Team from the Head of School account, so the completed checklist, together with the advertisement, should be sent to the Head of School email ([email protected]) and your advert and further particulars will be forwarded to HR. Please note that the checklist stays internal to the school EDI committee and does not go to HR.

The school’s approved equality and diversity policy information paragraph also has been updated and should be included in all staff recruitment further particulars. The current version is below, and the ‘Biology approved recruitment item for further particulars‘ can be found in the new biointernal in the BEDI Policy and Procedures folder.

The University of St Andrews School of Biology was awarded the Athena SWAN Gold award in 2021 for its sustained progression, achievement and beacon activity in advancing equality and representation. The School particularly welcomes applications from those suitably qualified from all genders, all races, ethnicities and nationalities, LGBT+, all or no religion, all social class backgrounds, and all family structures. The School values equality and diversity across its workforce and offers a family friendly and supportive environment in which flexible working is encouraged; we strive to hold important meetings/seminars within core hours of 09.15 to 14.45. In addition, a broad variety of measures are currently being introduced to ensure effective career progression for everyone and to eradicate the historical lack of diversity at higher professional levels.
