Scientific Technologies Foundation Apprentice’s gain important work experience.

At the start of June, the School of Biology welcomed a group of six Scientific Technologies Foundation Apprentice students from Fife College for a week’s work placement. Hosted predominantly by School technicians, the students were assigned in pairs to each of our three buildings, and rotated through them during the week, experiencing the mind-boggling variety of activities which happen in our workplace every day. The students ticked off learning outcomes such as data collection and waste management while undertaking tasks ranging from media preparation to insect colony maintenance to diatom counting.
The students left with all learning outcomes achieved and an insight into the realities of research ranging from the need to work through repetitive tasks reliably, to the responsibility of working with living organisms.
This was all made possible by the hard work of the Biology PSS staff, who put their own tasks on hold for a time to plan suitable experiences for the students before their arrival, and then make sure they were supported and able to make the most of their time in the labs safely.
