Fellows normally carry out their research part-time over 2 years, in a university or research establishment in the UK. The Fellowships are flexible and include a tailored training programme designed to update skills and knowledge and support candidates in their return to research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dr Stefania Pasare has been awarded a 3-year, part-time Daphne Jackson fellowship sponsored by Medical Research Scotland, which started October 2016.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Stefania has a BSc from the Faculty of Horticulture, in Bucharest, Romania, an MSc in Plant Genetic Manipulation from the University of Nottingham, UK and received her PhD in 2013 from the Royal Holloway, University College of London and The James Hutton Institute in Dundee. Following a career break in 2013 to have her daughter Ilinca, Stefania joined Dr Marcus Bischoff\u2019s lab in 2015 as a research technician.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The subject of her fellowship proposal was \u2018<i>Investigating cell extrusion and cell death during tissue morphogenesis in Drosophila melanogaste<\/i>r\u2019. Cell removal can have many reasons, and misregulation of cell death can trigger associated diseases such as Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, stroke or myocardial infarction or tumorigenesis leading to cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Stefania proposes to study the abdominal epithelial morphogenesis of <i>Drosophila<\/i> fruit flies in order to characterise the factors determining the path a cell can take towards normal cell death (apoptosis).
