12.5.2015: Sonja Heinrich (MSc Marine Mammal Science course director) was out recruiting future marine (mammal) scientists in a slightly different age group than usual. The Scottish Fisheries Museum is hosting a Whaling exhibition (“Poles apart-changing attitudesBuildingAFoodWeb_P1020957 to whaling in the 20th century”) in collaboration with University of St Andrews Library, Special Collections Team. A large group of local primary school children visited the exhibition and also learnt how we study whales nowadays and what it is like to be a ‘whale scientist’.

The voting result on “who wants to be a whale scientist?” makes the recent election majorities pale in comparison – almost 100% Yes-votes from the 9 to 11 year olds. They also built a local marine food web, learned about sustainable fishing and measured out a life-sized minke whale…. The future for marine (mammal) science looks very bright indeed!
