Science Discovery Day
The Sea Mammal Research Unit had a popular display at the University of St Andrews Science Discovery Day – about 700 people came to the event!
The display included games, such as “spot the difference” (dolphin vs shark) and a matching game (seal photo ID). There was also a chance to experience how cold water feels as a marine mammal, with a “seal glove”. We learned about how seal tags are like waterproof mobile phones and can help in informing weather prediction, sea level rise and in understanding the effect of marine renewable developments on seals. Finally, with lots of skulls, teeth and baleen, we learned how to age sperm whales and how different whales feed! Thank you so much to the volunteers (Fedak, Nadya, Izzy and Alina) and to all who contributed bits to the display.
