Making media and resources
This page is aimed at members of staff from the School of Biology who require media connected with ongoing public engagement work.
There are different types of media available to highlight your work, for example:
- leaflets
- posters and displays
- photographs
- audio visual materials
- videos
- e-learning
- models
- mechanical interactives
- complete exhibition stands.
There are several units and individuals at the University of St Andrews who can help you to design and make a wide variety of media products. Who you need to talk to will depend on what kind of things you are thinking about making.
The individuals and departments listed below offer many valuable creative talents and skills, so whatever you are interested in doing, the next step is likely to be get in touch with some of them and begin a conversation. We recommend contacting the relevant person or department as soon as possible in the life cycle of your project.”

Staff members
Alina Loth – illustrator
Alina is leading a project called Research Illustration which aims to present the work of researchers at the University of St Andrews through graphics, illustrations and art. She holds degrees in both in science and fine arts and can offer a wide range of different styles of drawings and illustrations for public engagement, conference talks, posters and publications.

Henry Rae – model maker
Henry is a skilled model maker and sculptor. He can make a range of static, moving, and interactive 3D projects. He can work with a variety of materials such as resins, fibreglass, silicones, wood, perspex and thermoplastics.
Henry’s models have been used at Royal Society’s Science exhibitions, by industry, and at various museums and research groups in many countries around the world. External clients include:
- The National Museum of Scotland
- Glasgow University
- Herriot Watt University
- Edinburgh University
- Oxford University.

Steve Smart – designer and photographer
Steve is an information designer employed part-time by both the School of Biology and the School of Medicine, he also works freelance for other departments and clients. Over a wide variety of projects Steve has designed leaflets and posters, diagrams for publication, logos, complete exhibition stands, e-learning packages, and websites.
Steve also has media skills in stills photography and video production.
Steve has designed for several Royal Society exhibits, including St Andrews’ exhibit during the Royal Society’s 350th anniversary year.

Mhairi Stewart – public engagement officer
Mhairi is the University’s public engagement officer and can offer advice, guidance and contacts regarding development, delivery, funding and audience recruitment for all public engagement activities. Mhairi has 17 years research experience prior to specializing in public engagement for research. Mhairi is the current holder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh prize for Innovation in Public Engagement.

Psychology workshop
The psychology workshop is a mechanical workshop where work can be carried out for other departments. The workshop is based at the School of Psychology. The workshop can design and fabricate bespoke 3D objects and devices for research and exhibition, including mechanical parts and devices and electronic control devices. The workshop uses both 3D printing and traditional machining.
