{"id":523,"date":"2015-05-13T07:54:11","date_gmt":"2015-05-13T07:54:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/synergy.st-andrews.ac.uk\/biooutreach\/?p=523"},"modified":"2015-05-13T07:54:11","modified_gmt":"2015-05-13T07:54:11","slug":"calling-young-marine-mammal-scientists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/biology.st-andrews.ac.uk\/outreach\/2015\/05\/13\/calling-young-marine-mammal-scientists\/","title":{"rendered":"Calling young Marine Mammal Scientists&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>12.5.2015:\u00a0Sonja Heinrich (<a href=\"https:\/\/synergy.st-andrews.ac.uk\/biopostgraduate\/msc-marine-mammal-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MSc Marine Mammal Science<\/a> course director) was out recruiting future marine (mammal) scientists in a slightly different age group than usual. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotfishmuseum.org\/about-the-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Scottish Fisheries Museum<\/a> is hosting a Whaling exhibition (&#8220;Poles apart-changing attitudes<em><a href=\"https:\/\/synergy.st-andrews.ac.uk\/biopostgraduate\/files\/2015\/05\/BuildingAFoodWeb_P1020957.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-710 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/synergy.st-andrews.ac.uk\/biopostgraduate\/files\/2015\/05\/BuildingAFoodWeb_P1020957-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"BuildingAFoodWeb_P1020957\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/em> to whaling in the 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century&#8221;) in collaboration with University of St Andrews Library, Special Collections Team. A large group of local primary school children visited the exhibition and also learnt how we study whales nowadays and what it is like to be a &#8216;whale scientist&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The voting result on &#8220;<em>who wants to be a whale scientist?<\/em>&#8221; makes the recent election majorities pale in comparison &#8211; almost 100% Yes-votes from the 9 to 11 year olds. They also built a local marine food web, learned about sustainable fishing and measured out a life-sized minke whale&#8230;.
