Gareth Miles received his PhD from the University of Auckland, New Zealand in 2003. He then undertook postdoctoral training at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada.  In 2007, he began his own independent research laboratory at the University of St Andrews. He is currently Professor of Neuroscience and Head of the School of Psychology & Neuroscience. His research is focused on deciphering motor control networks of the spinal cord and brainstem. His laboratory also investigates disease mechanisms underlying Motor Neurone Disease (MND). In 2015, he received the prestigious Paulo Gontijo Award for Medicine based on this research into MND.
