Biophotonics Summer School

The Centre of Biophotonics has launched its first Summer School in Biophotonics. From the 24th to the 28th of June around 30 participants from Scotland, North England, Germany and Italy have attended the school that was mainly focused on state-of-the-art imaging modalities covering from single-molecules to cells and tissue. The school was organized by Dr Paolo Annibale and Prof Carlos Penedo and primarly as a hands-on experience with introductory lectures from 9.00 to 11.00 which were followed by intensive experimental modules for small groups (4-5 people). Each module was delivered by leading experts in their respective areas and all within a relax atmosphere with opportunities for netwoking. The school targets mostly post-graduate students, post-doctoral and early career researchers across the physics and life sciences with an interest in cutting-edge microscopy.
We would like to thank Dr Juan Varela, Dr John Danial, Dr Graham Bruce, Dr Marcus Bischoff for assisting with the organization and developing the different modules and theory sessions. Big thanks also to all PhD and PDRAs members of the CoB that helped to develop and deliver the hands-on experiments.
Modules delivered this year included:
- 4D confocal (Dr Marcus Bischoff)
- FRET biosensing in cells (Dr Paolo Annibale)
- Single-molecule FRET (Dr Carlos Penedo)
- Super-resolution microscopy (Dr John Danial)
- Single-particle tracking (Dr Juan Varela)
- Raman microscopy and spectroscopy (Dr Graham Bruce)
- Imaging molecular diffusion (Dr Paolo Annibale)
- Hybrid force-fluorescence microscopy using dual optical tweezers (Dr Carlos Penedo)
We are very grateful to the company partners below for sponsoring the summer school and delivering talks

Congratulations also to Sarah-Jane Twigg (St Andrews), Saria Mansoor (Dundee) and Matthias König (Cologne) for the presentation prize on the hands-on topic of single-molecule structural FRET
We expect to host the summer school again in June 2025, more info near the time….
