Following a PhD at the University of Göttingen, Germany, and postdocs in Dundee and Edinburgh, I moved to St Andrews in 2012, where I was promoted to lecturer in 2015. My position is a joint appointment between the University of St Andrews and the James Hutton Institute, Dundee. Work in my lab focuses on nano-scale channels interconnecting plant cells, and the transport of viruses through them. We make extensive use of live cell and super-resolution imaging (confocal, 3D-SIM) including development of new reporter systems for RNA tracking. Increasingly, we also use microscopy-based biophysical approaches to characterise proteins of interest.

Research areas:

  • Plant viruses
  • Plasmodesmata
  • RNA imaging
  • Cell biology
